Opportunity awaits for either John or Richardson

Rarely do you worry about a preview where it tempts fate of what is going to happen, yet the fight between Joshua John (11-2) and Logan Richardson (6-0, 2 KOs) is no ordinary fight.

The magnitude of what lies ahead is significant, an opportunity at the prestigious Lonsdale belt.

And both fighters don’t have to wait much longer, they go to battle tomorrow evening in a fascinating bantamweight British title final eliminator, Underground at The Galleries, Bristol.

Unbeaten and ranked highly as a bantamweight contender on these shores is Hull’s Richardson, who has been breezing his way to titles. Look no further than his last outing at the GL1 Leisure Centre, Gloucester, where he stopped undefeated Lewis Roberts to claim the English bantamweight title in the seventh round.

Before that monumental occasion back in March this year, was his first outing in what was over a year outside of the ring. He claimed his first professional title 371 days earlier at the Grand Central Hall, Liverpool, where he stopped Jake Harrison within the distance to pick up the Central Area bantamweight title.

In the opposing corner stands Port Talbot’s John, who in thirteen pro fights has yet to claim a professional title.

But previously caused problems for Liverpool’s Brand Strand when the pair met at the York Hall in a hard-fought 10-round fight for the WBO European super-bantamweight.

It’s quick to forget that the orthodox fighter was in line to meet the British title holder, Andrew Cain, in a fight where he could’ve picked up two belts as the Commonwealth title was also up for grabs.

The fight didn’t appear on last year’s September board circular, and it was later revealed that the British Boxing Board of Control rejected the fight. The night they were meant to meet, Cain was still in action as he faced Colomobia’s Lazaro Casseres for the vacant WBC International Silver title at bantamweight.

Despite all this, the 30-year-old Welshmen has been keeping himself active since the Brand contest, with comfortable wins over tricky opposition. These included a trio of consecutive victories over Marvin Solano, Caine Singh, and Adam Yahaya, all of which took place at the Vale Sports Arena in Cardiff.

The winner of this contest on Saturday is guaranteed a fight against Cain down the line. Let’s just hope that these two fighters, who are going to battle on Saturday, will get the opportunity to challenge him.

In the pick of the undercard fights on the show promoted by Chris Sanigar of Sanigar Events, Bristol’s Anton Haskins (12-0, 2 KOs) is in the toughest test of his professional career so far.

He meets Welsh Champion, Rashid Omar (8-2, 1 KO), who in his last outing put aside Luke Bibby in a Celtic title super-lightweight eliminator at the LC2, Swansea, live on BBC. Saturday will see Haskins, who goes by the nickname ‘Joker’, in his first eight-rounder.

Elsewhere on the card, Wales’ Ioan Croft (3-0, 2 KOs) makes his fourth appearance as a professional, whilst Calne’s Connor Gray (13-1, 1 KO) will be looking to return to winning ways, after a razor close decision loss against Billy Pickles.

Westbury’s Megan Redstall (4-0-1) is also in action, as Bristol’s own Logan Dorrington (7-0, 4KOs), Charlie Sutton (4-1, 1 K0), Matt Lawrence (1-0) and Bath’s Jake Dugan (2-0) complete a brilliant night of Anglo-Welsh action Underground at The Galleries.
