Mobile Sports Journalism Work

Harry Tovey’s Portfolio

This website will showcase my portfolio of my mobile journalism work which I have completed during my second year as a Sports Journalism student at the University of South Wales.

The portfolio itself includes a commentary, multimedia and digital story piece which highlight stories across all levels of the sporting landscape.

Situated at the main entrance of Principality Stadium stands the statue of former Welsh Rugby Union President, Sir Tasker Watkins.

With anticipation and excitement building towards the start of the 2025 Guinness Six Nations, 1000s of passionate and raucous Rugby Union fans will be flooding past one of Wales’ Rugby legends.

In a year that marks another new era in Welsh Rugby, Wales will be favourites to finish bottom of the Six Nations for the second consecutive year. However, Watkins perhaps saw the most significant change for the game in Wales whilst being President of the Union. He overlooked the transition from the amateur era in Wales to the professional era.

He was a war hero, having served in the British Army during the Second World War, where he was awarded the Victoria Cross for his distinguished service.

An entire nation was engrossed in the boy who changed the darting landscape on January 3rd 2025.

In what has been a meteoric rise, Luke Littler has changed the world of darts considerably. At just 17 years old, he became the youngest PDC (Professional Darts Corporation) World Champion by defeating Michael van Gerwen 7-3 in a thrilling contest at the Alexandra Palace.

It did, however, not come as a surprise to anyone that the teenager had the minerals to claim the most lucrative prize in the darting world. This is because, during his first year as a professional player, he triumphed in almost everything, and astonishingly, he did it at the first attempt.

At his first World Series of Darts event, held in Bahrain, he claimed victory with ease, followed by wins in both his debut appearances in Players Championship and European Tour events. This was then the catalyst for what came later in the year, when, after a long 17-week roadshow across the United Kingdom and Europe, he triumphed in his first Major, as he secured the 2024 Bet MGM Premier League title at the 02 in London.

The piece below reflects on what was an unbelievable 2024 for Littler, and we dive deep into his route to the final, as it wasn’t always plain sailing.

A new coach, a new era for Cardiff RFC

With the new Super Rygbi Cymru league getting underway, Cardiff RFC announced that former player Dan Fish will be taking the helm as head coach. This came after the club’s successful bid to take part in the new era of rugby union in Wales.

The fullback made 111 appearances for the regional side Cardiff Rugby, which spanned over a decade with the Cardiff Arms Park club. He retired from the professional game in 2021, where he took up a position as the academy’s skills coach.

With the conclusion of the 2023/24 season, perhaps coming earlier than expected at the club after a 34-13 defeat away to Llandovery RFC in the semi-finals. It meant that Fish’s predecessor, Steve Law, took charge of his last game as the Blue and Blacks’ head coach.

Despite this being the 34-year-old’s first time in a head coach role, it hasn’t been a bad start to the season for his side. Victories over RGC 1404, Ebbw Vale, Carmarthen Quins, and Swansea have put Fish’s side in pole position in Super Rygbi Cymru.
